China summarizes health achievements at WHA
China has been taking concrete action to boost equitable and accessible healthcare in developing countries, said Cao Xuetao, vice-minister of the National Health Commission, during a meeting of the 76th World Health Assembly on Monday.
He said China has sent about 30,000 medical workers to 76 countries and regions in the past 60 years, providing diagnoses and treatment for 290 million patients.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, China donated $50 million to the World Health Organization and $100 million to COVAX, an international initiative that distributes vaccines to low- and middle-income countries.
The country dispatched 38 groups of expert teams to 34 countries to help them fight the disease and supplied over 2.2 billion vaccines to more than 120 international organizations and countries.
He added in China, 90 percent of families are able to reach their nearest medical facility within 15 minutes, and its basic medical insurance program covers over 95 percent of its total population.
